Congratulations to HarperCollins Publishers for being selected as August’s Campaign of the Month winner! Their marketing campaign’s aim was to promote the launch of comedian Rob Beckett’s new book titled A Class Act: Life as a Working-Class Man in a Middle-Class World. We selected this billboard as our winner because their advertisement was so striking and beautifully designed that we deemed it a real ‘Class Act’!
Not only was the advert’s design well done, but an old lamppost ironically and unexpectedly ended up making an appearance on the advertising campaign, which made it even more memorable! Rob Beckett created a stir on Instagram when he posted a comical video showcasing his reaction to seeing his face partially covered by the lamppost. Sorry about the lamp, Rob, it’s always been there!
This billboard, and the lamppost, had their moment of social media fame because Rob’s Instagram video has garnered more than 100,000 views thus far! And as a result of his social media postings, people have been visiting Kent to find the famous billboard themselves and take funny selfies in front of it. Overall, this campaign has successfully created an infectious, humorous online buzz. It has demonstrated that a strikingly designed advert on a billboard will get noticed, even with a lamppost in the way!
What top tips should you consider when creating your next billboard advert to make it as successful as this one?
Keep Your Design Simple and Straightforward
Keep your wording as short and sweet as possible, so that the viewers can quickly register the important information. Also, incorporate an image that reflects the product you are selling or service you are providing. In this case, the billboard displayed a book and a photo of the author.
Incorporate Humour
A little humour goes a long way… especially in advertising! Most people tend to remember billboard adverts that they’ve seen that contain some form of comedic content. This strategy tends to appeal to human emotion, making them more than likely to have a long-lasting, memorable impact.
Utilise the Surroundings
Who would have thought that the presence of a lamppost placed in front of a billboard would one day be the talk of the town? Utilising the surroundings of a billboard where your advert will be displayed can help you create an even more effective marketing campaign. You never know what creative idea (or object) might present itself!
