Billboards Have Heart: Championing Charitable Causes
Today is #BlueMonday. As happens every year, it’s the number one hashtag trending on X (formerly Twitter). You might know that #BlueMonday was invented in 2004 by a psychologist employed by a travel company. It might have started off as one very clever marketing ploy, but this infamous ‘awareness day’ got us thinking: how can billboards bring attention to really important social causes?
Awareness Trends 🤝 Billboard Campaigns
The creators of the #BlueMonday awareness day ended up focusing minds on mental health – a worthy cause! Throughout the year, there are countless ‘awareness’ days and weeks. These can be powerful markers that act as great hooks that charities can use to focus minds on their cause.
Take a look at this #MothersDay campaign ran by CHD Living. It’s a great example of how a billboard can bring attention to a really serious cause like dementia. The way that this billboard campaign treats this difficult subject with dignity and compassion is very impressive. ps. We’re not crying. You are.
Seasonal Campaigning 🤝 Charitable causes
Of course, awareness trends are not limited to a one-day event like Mother’s Day or Blue Monday. Think Dry January, Easter, or Christmas. These are all periods of time that can be used to bring attention to a cause.
During Christmas last year, for example, we partnered up with Centrepoint to bring attention to youth homelessness. Christmas is a time of year that champions charity and compassion, so it’s a good time to convey a message that will capture people’s hearts and minds.
