It’s estimated that the average person is exposed to roughly 6,000 – 10,000 ads every single day. That number is astounding! Now, as an advertiser yourself, the best way to be remembered by your consumers is to create the most original, unique advert possible.
We’ve encountered thousands of billboard campaigns during our decades-long tenure in the industry. We’ve found that some of the most brilliant, traffic-stopping billboards are ones that utilise and incorporate the surrounding environment to deliver their message. Here are a few examples of billboards from around the world that are bold, creative, funny, and most importantly, effective!
Use Surrounding Elements to Your Advantage.
This billboard by Miele uses an optical illusion to make it look as though drivers are travelling into their product, a hoover, rather than a tunnel on the road. In this instance, the billboard has come to life and gives road users a fun, engaging, and memorable experience.
Instead of letting the telephone lines interrupt the view of your billboard, include them in it! This hilarious billboard by Panasonic catches the eye of passersby due to its standout nature and comedic relief. It’s so effective that it has us wanting to buy hair trimmers just to cut the long nose hair off this man!
A head-banging headache that came in like a wrecking ball? This billboard surely *hits* home for us all. Tylenol cleverly utilises a real bulldozer to make viewers relate to just how painful a headache can be. This ad makes us want to take some Tylenol to get rid of the pain for this guy!
Optical Illusions
The purpose of this Formula ad is meant to demonstrate just how strong your teeth will be after using their toothpaste. The optical illusion depicted here looks as if the subject in the ad has strong enough teeth to grip and bend the metal billboard. Looks convincing to us!
Use the billboard pole to your advantage! Denver Water urges the public to conserve water usage by showing a life-like garden house tied in a knot.
The Sky Has No Limits!
By cutting out pieces of the right corner of the billboard, the colour of the paint will always match the sky… because it is the sky! Berger Paints depicts their warm–couloured paint products by utilising the cool blue tones of the sky. Such a simple, yet ingenious idea.
This ad produced by Ponds has a cutout in the shape of a pore, which utilises the colour of the sky to make it stand out amongst the rest of the billboard. To add a bit of humour, they also depict a man sweeping to act as the cleansing facial wash.
The line on this advertisement reads, “See, I can draw the sky…” which rings true due to the design of this billboard. The little girl protrudes past the border of the billboard making it look like she’s the talented artist drawing the clouds. It’s meant to demonstrate that the quality of Faber-Castell colour pencils is so great that even children can draw something as beautiful as the sky. Her artistic masterpiece changes as the sky does… imagine how spectacular this must look at sunset!
